The weather today is mizzle

 On the train home. About two thirds of the way from Durham to London, and I don't think I've been able to see further than 200m from the train at any point. If anything the mist is getting thicker.

My mother summed it up when she saw me off as "a really miserable, mizzly day".

Good word, mizzle (= mist+drizzle")

It says everything that these islands have such a huge variety of words for inclement weather!

The visibility did open up to about a mile south of Peterborough, but the weather stayed the same all the way home.

Weather words are the best.

Something I've never experienced, but often admired when listening to Radio Canada International*: ice pellets.

Huh. I'd heard that word before, but hadn't put the etymology together. It seems so obvious in retrospect. It's a good word.
