I just had my first e-scooter rider try to impale himself on my front bumper this afternoon. He wasn't on the road, but instead shot across a pedestrian crossing from the other side of the road just before I got to it. I managed to stop about 5m short, and only by braking far harder than I would in normal traffic

Not a young kid either, I'd guess forty-ish. That's a busy road, and just where it changes from a 30mph to a 40mph limit, so most people are usually accelerating about then. I strongly suspect he saw me and decided he'd force me to brake rather than wait.

If he'd been on my side, or I'd been closer or accelerating, I'd absolutely have had to do an emergency stop, and whether I could have avoided him would have been iffy - especially if someone else rear-ended me as a result.

Grrr!

(For the non-Brits, it's worth bearing in mind that it's not currently legal to ride an e-scooter on UK roads outside of a few trials areas in major cities, and those only for hire ones. And it's not legal to ride them on the footpath anywhere. If they come to police attention, they get seized and cut up).
