A friend is looking at the possibility of a national union of disabled people and is clearly thinking about constitutional stuff. He just asked on FB:

"If one is preparing a list of dimensions of equality/discrimination/etc, and not trying to just model it on the law, should one include all of gender, gender identity, and gender reassignment, or some subset of those? Gender has to be in there, of course, as it covers stuff other than trans*-related things."

"It's just a list (that's meant to touch a lot of bases without being exhaustive) of axes of oppression/disadvantage/discrimination etc. It doesn't include disability, because that's the starting point of it. I'm also not asking about things to include that aren't on the list except for the trans* stuff, because it's not meant to be exhaustive - I just want to include enough stuff to cover trans* stuff in ways that trans* people, by and large, will feel that they are included.

So, the list so far is: 'such as race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality and national origin, gender identity/reassignment, and religion or other belief'"

Anyone got some preferrred wording on that?

I think I'd lean towards "gender identity or presentation", but for reasons that I can't easily words why.

Coming from network: to me "reassignment" implies outward permission or action, whereas "presentation" is something the individual chooses for themselves.

just "gender identity" would work for me. (and "reassignment" really doesn't.)

(declaration of interest: this area is directly relevant to me.)
