US at the weekend (new National Security Strategy): We need to oppose Europe for insisting the right to stop hate speech overrides freedom of speech

US today: We're going to insist we can see 5 years of your social media* before we let you into the US in case you said nasty things about us.

So one rule for people saying things they like, and another for people saying things they don't? Not quite sure that's how the Founding Fathers anticipated free speech working.

* Also your phone numbers, your email addresses, plus the names and addresses of family members, including children. And if you've ever worked as a fact checker or in content moderation there is apparently a blanket ban,

Well, one of these would constrain the current regime and the other would constrain those who don't like the current regime, which is the only principle these people recognize.

Also, SCOTUS has decided libraries don't get freedom of speech, either.

Given the problems there have already been, friend and I exchanged glances when director of US institution we were meeting with the other week suggested we could go there to discuss the project.... I really don't think that's going to work. Friend doesn't do social media, but I can see at least one of her publications not making her persona grata (to do with black GIs in UK in WW2, attitudes of US brass).

I definitely think it's going to impact business as well as tourism. I never actually got to the US with my job, but it was certainly discussed a couple of times, and I just don't see the Make America Gross Again crowd being happy with my social media.

Yeah. Well, that's another huge reason not to visit the US right now.

It's freedom of speech, but only for people who say things we approve. 🙄
