Weird!

Well that was weird. My default icon (the crutches in the mirror one) disappeared over the weekend. The icon and the description was still there, but not the pic. Fortunately I did have a copy to hand to replace it, once I realised it wasn't just a DW hiccup as I initially assumed.

Well, I guess it was a DW hiccup, just not the one I thought it was.

The picture itself was taken in a hotel in Valle Gran Reyes, largely catering to the German tourist trade, on La Gomera in the Canaries. IIRC this was the trip where we'd done the Competent Crew yachting course in San Sebastian and we'd then moved to the opposite side of the island for a few days sightseeing. If memory serves I was lying on the bed feeling utterly knackered, noticed the reflection of the crutches in the mirror across from the bed, and thought "that's a good metaphor for how everyone thinks disabled people aren't quite of this earth". And it still is.

For what it's worth, people's icons have been randomly disappearing for me all weekend; at this point I'm just waiting it out.

Yeah, I saw it for other people too, but it seemed to have mostly cured itself this morning, except for my default icon, so I decided to poke about and noticed the pic had disappeared. I could have waited it out, but it was also relatively simple to replace it.

Understood. I'm wondering why I can see one icon by a user just fine and then another one of theirs not at all.

The reason there were server hiccups over the weekend is that they did a server migration because Dreamwidth ditched Cloudflare over KiwiFarms. Here's the explanation. If you haven't heard of KiwiFarms, cherish that ignorance. They are both repulsive and genuinely dangerous.

(Cloudflare have since ditched KiwiFarms as a customer, but for reasons outlined in the post, that doesn't change things for Dreamwidth.)

I'm up to date with the Cloudflare story. Caching sounds right, because I fixed it by creating a new default icon, and the only icon-fail I've seen so far today identified itself as someone's default icon.

I have been following that, which is why I haven't bugged them about the icons which are still continuing to show up intermittently on both my journal and other people's. If it doesn't sort itself out in a bit, I'll mention it, but right now I figure it falls under "intermittent issues."
