All you need to know about the end of Covid rules in England

Rule 1 of Covid Stupidity Club: There are no rules. Or thought.

Boris is going to look spectacularly stupid when a new variant emerges (and one will, Omicron doesn't mean Covid has hit a stable level of infectiousness/lethality), the big question will be how many people he's killed to assuage his Chancellor and the berserker fringe of the Tory back-benchers.

I am especially pissed off about the lifting of surveillance testing for schoolchildren and daily tests for people exposed to Covid. What a great way to make sure it keeps circulating in schools and workplaces!

It occurs to me as well that without regular surveillance testing it's going to be much harder to judge what case rates are like and therefore whether we (my household) can ease up because they're falling, or need to stay risk averse because they're still Way Too High - as they have been for months.

It's such a stupid "saving" of money, utterly counterproductive for getting people "back to normal" whatever that is supposed to mean.

There's already a known sub-variant of Omicron, BA.2, which

a) is more contagious than original-version Omicron

b) unlike original-version Omicron, does not respond to antiviral medications

We're probably not all going to die. Older and poorer people will die disproportionately. But how many of us are going to get Long Covid, or suffer from vascular problems because of covid? It's a great opportunity for the eugenicists to get more traction again, after a period where we've mostly been pushing them back. It also means that I won't be out and about spending my money on trains, restaurants, etc., because it's almost certainly not safe.
