I'm still not quite back to my normal reading speed, though I think that's at least in part because I've been reading a lot of role-playing stuff. OTOH I was trying to think what I should read next earlier today, so hopefully I'm getting there, OTGH I still seem to be shying away from anything with darker themes or that puts familiar characters in arc-changing peril, so it looks like my head hasn't worked its way around all the family medical stress yet. But on to what I've read, rather than not read:
Hunting Season, The 20-Sided Sorceress Book 4, Annie Bellet
Picking up a few weeks after Book 3, Jade finds one of her successors as series-bad-guy Samir's lover/apprentice on her doorstep and begging for sanctuary, but can she trust her? Especially when she's promptly called in to save a unicorn mauled by demonic wolves, and the coincidence-too-far alarm-bells start ringing. This one actually surprised me because it moves the series arc on a lot faster than I'd expected and it's entirely possible the next book will be the climax (probably just as well, there's a definite formulaic feeling in the plots). I liked that it delved into the ethical problems of how sorceresses like Jade gain experience - by eating the hearts of their enemies, but I'm not sure the other characters are really developing any additional depth as the story progresses.
And the only other thing read are a bunch of shorts that I stumbled across while looking for RPG-stuff, they're by Martin Dougherty, author of the Traveller novels I mentioned in the last couple of these, quick reads, but fairly minor work: Three stories about starship captains engaging in various derring-do, one about old frontier scouts never retiring, one about someone making a last-stand on principle, which intriguingly opens 'I knew exactly what I was doing when I shot the herald', and a piece of flavour text for a game that never appeared: see the 'Fiction, articles and other scribblings' entry at http://www.martinjdougherty.com/avenger-enterprises.html
