Arghh! And HOW much!!!

The arghh! is because I'm re-reading Cherryh's Foreigner sequence, or the bits of it I own. I'd really forgotten just how good it is (and I will write a review), but I just finished the second trilogy, and I knew I only had the first seven books, so was getting to the point I'd have to start buying the ones I haven't got (she's up to 16!). The problem turns out to be I actually have eight, but that's books 1-6, and 8 and 9. For some reason I don't have a copy of book 7. I think what happened was I'd been buying the series in hardback, missed finding a copy of 7 in hardback, bought 8 and 9 in hardback so I didn't miss them while I tried to find 7, and then never found one, stopped buying hardbacks in general (space!), and lost track of the series. I'm not sure I've even read 8 and 9, but I'm definitely not reading them again until I've found a copy of 7. So I checked on Amazon and while the series isn't available as ebooks, there are a various copies of hardbacked 7 available from Amazon vendors in various conditions, including several 'very good' for significantly less than the paperback. I was amused by one listed as 'good' for £7, I'm not sure I'd list a book as 'good' if I also needed to note "has some passages underlined, and may have damage to the spine" or words to that effect! But what made me go HOW Much!!! were the three new copies at prices ranging up to £77, never mind the £350-odd for another one of the series (that one's probably one of those automated listings competing with each other things, but the £77 is potentially a dealer trying his luck).
Meanwhile, I'm perched on the desk chair, and very specifically perched rather than sat, as it's half-dismantled and I've got a nasty feeling it'll be fully dismantled if I forget and lean back. It's half dismantled as I'm about to try and re-cover it as the faux leather has decided it can't live with its fake identity and is shedding its faux all over the place (plus the material and stitching on one of the seat panels has given way). I (or rather my mother) sourced a large sheet of more robust fake-leather over the holidays, and I'm just about ready to start cutting and glueing. Wish me luck!
If you don't hear from me for a day or two, I'm probably superglued to the back of my chair....

Date: 2018-01-31 07:53 pm (UTC)I used to read Cherryh religiously, to the point I have most of her stuff in hardback, but she dropped out of my reading without me ever really meaning to let it happen.

Date: 2018-02-05 04:38 pm (UTC)It's in such good condition I wouldn't have batted an eye at finding it on a bookstore shelf as a new copy. So I now have the hardback for less than the cost of the paperback - score!
{First World Problems}It does mean I have to work out what gets evicted from the bookcase to find room for it, but I guess I can put that off until I finish the trilogy{/First World Problems}
