Lunch* in town. Had to laugh at the hulking guy at the next table over talking about maintaining older cars: "I used to fiddle about with the choke and the spark plugs. I had no idea what I was doing, but it seemed like the manly thing to do"

*Trout and crab salad with a poached egg. Not as good as the tuna nicoise salad it's replaced on the menu, but not bad. I'll be eating it again**.

** Though next time, hopefully without the side order of backache!

Your lunches in town always sound so delicious. I have no idea where I would even get trout and crab salad. :p

We just have one very pretentious pub ;)

Currently got my fingers crossed my friends will start our regular Saturday lunches again (though I'm competing with the attraction of a new grandchild there).

Trout & crab salad sounds exceptionally tasty..

When they serve tuna in your parts is it generally fresh meat or from a tin?

It was certainly tasty. Not a huge amount of crab, more of a garnish, really, but a whole trout fillet on a bed of large leafed cress and sliced radishes, with a mustard vinaigrette, and with a poached egg on top.

In shops you're more likely to find tuna in a tin, but it's certainly possible to get fresh. I don't buy fish too often, but I picked up some fresh fish when I was shopping afterwards as the local supermarket had just marked down a load given it was late of Saturday afternoon: haddock, trout, and whole sardines. As I freeze stuff to defrost as needed, the limited shelf-life didn't matter.

But for the tuna nicoise salad at the George Vaults, it was a steak about the size of your hand and an inch thick - yum!
