WRT UK police, it's rare to see armed officers outside of airports and a few spots in London - major rail stations, embassies, etc. Most UK police forces (roughly one per UK county) have one or two Armed Response Vehicles on duty at any time, the officers in these do normal policing until called on,they keep the serious weaponry in a gun safe in their patrol car, but may wear pistols - OTOH tasers are now much more common, though far from universal. I've seen more armed police today in Athens than in the last year in the UK.
