Since you mention "Britishness" of Hamilton, I think I'd add Ken MacLoed's Star Fraction series here. Didn't love all of them, but each has something compelling in them, and the fist novel was especially interesting.
And I'd have loved to add Al Reynolds' Revelation Space but the last volume especially didn't live up to the promise, IMO...
