P.S. there are a couple of structural elements I'm not entirely convinced by.

I have not yet read the novel, but it sounds as though they may have been elaborated from similar devices in the original short story, "The Mad Scientist's Daughter." (Goss wrote a separate take on Catherine Moreau, "The Puma," which I loved, but it no longer appears to be online.)
